In evaluating the case, additional important information should be sought regarding any prior injury, ED visits, birth history, newborn screening for metabolic and other disorders, primary care visits, child development and immunizations; Family history should be sought regarding neurologic, congenital and bleeding disorders and information is needed regarding other children in the home and other adults in the home and/or caring for the infant for the days before the infant became first ill. This is helpful because serious cases of AHT result in immediate changes in the infant’s behavior.
