Introduction : About this Revised Edition
Child Abuse Evaluation & Treatment for Medical Providers is a series of clinical chapters that provide practical, evidence-based guidance to support healthcare professionals involved in the evaluation of suspected child abuse. This resource does not replace a referral to a child abuse pediatrician or other healthcare professional.
Originally launched in 1998, it was one of the first comprehensive online resources dedicated to this field. The website, ChildAbuseMD.com, was made possible through funding from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and the New York State Department of Health, Office of Maternal and Child Health.
This revised 2025 edition reflects advances in medical standards, legal frameworks, and the development of key organizations supporting child protection. The content is organized to follow a clinician’s natural decision-making process. Beginning with triage, the chapters progress step-by-step through medical evaluation, documentation, consultation, mandated reporting, and follow-up care. Each chapter offers concise, actionable guidance based on current best practices in child abuse pediatrics.
We hope these resources will serve as a reliable companion in your daily clinical practice. Your feedback is welcome and essential as we continue to improve and expand this work.
