Radiology : Imaging in Other Maltreatment Situations

Children who are involved in interpersonal violence disputes or maltreatment situations may need further evaluation, including radiologic imaging. In each situation, the history and physical should guide the medical provider and consultation with a child abuse expert should be considered.

Interpersonal violence
If there is a suspicion that the infant or child is injured, such as from a fall or direct blow, consider a skeletal survey and complete non-accidental trauma work-up.
Sexual abuse
Young children who have been sexually abused, may be at risk of physical abuse. The medical provider may notice marks in unusual places from being held or tied down, or be concerned due to the age of the child.
Burns
Many injuries due to burns are the result of neglect. However, young children with burns, particularly infants, may warrant a full work-up for non-accidental trauma, including radiographic imaging.
Neglect
Neglected children may also be in high-risk situations where other forms of maltreatment may be occurring.
Emotional and psychological maltreatment
As above, review each situation on a case-by-case basis and consider whether physical abuse has also occurred.
