Eye findings in abusive head trauma can mimic other injuries or conditions. However, what sets AHT apart are the extent of the hemorrhages, their greater numbers and involving multiple layers of the retina and extending peripherally to the ora seratis as in the first image. The second image shows multiple bleeds with deeper pools of blood. In addition, there can be retinal detachment from the back of the eye and something called retinoschisis, where the layers are physically separated from each other.
